Capsules

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ) for capsule manufacturing?

Our MOQ for standard size 0, size 00, size 1 and size 2 capsules is around 100,000 capsules or 1,666 units (60 count). Our minimums vary based on size and type of capsule (gelatin or vegetable capsules).

How many milligrams of ingredients can fit into a capsule?

There are various capsules sizes ranging from size “4” to “000”. At USI, we work with size 2 to 00. A Size “00” size capsule will hold around 700 mg and a size 2 will hold about 200 mg. However, the nature of the material plays a big part of what can fit into a capsule. If an ingredient is light or “fluffy,” it will fit into a capsule differently than a more dense and heavier ingredient. Additionally, after filling, there will always be a bit of space left in the capsule as the product settles.

Why should I choose capsules over tablets?

Brands choose capsules for a variety of reasons. In general, capsules use less excipients and fillers that are used in tablets therefore active ingredients have more room. In addition, capsules are generally easier to swallow and dissolve faster than tablets. We can help you decide which form, capsule or tablet, is right for your product.

Which should I use: gelatin or vegetable capsules?

This decision is up to you! They function the same way, however gelatin capsules are usually more inexpensive than vegetable capsules.

What are excipients and why are they used in capsule manufacturing?

Excipients like magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and others are used in dietary supplement manufacturing to help the active ingredients flow through the machinery during the manufacturing process. There are also excipients used to add weight to the capsules, prevent clumping of the ingredients, and provide stability to the finished product. Magnesium stearate, for example, is classified by the FDA and is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) ingredient that helps lubricate active ingredients in formulations so that the ingredients properly flow to the encapsulation rings and/or encapsulation segments. Excipients are a necessary part of successful capsule manufacturing, ensuring smooth processing, and producing a shelf-stable, finished product.

Tablets

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ) for tablet manufacturing?

Our MOQ is 100,000 tablets or 1,666 units (60-count).

How many milligrams of ingredients can fit into a tablet?

The range of raw material that can fit into a tablet depends on its size and shape - the possibilities are endless! There are some ingredients that are hard to compress into a tablet form, but in general more raw materials can fit into a tablet than in a capsule.

Why should I choose tablets as a delivery form?

Tablets work best as a delivery form when the formulation requires more ingredients than can fit in a capsule. If you want to have your customers chew and taste the formula you created, then chewable tablets are a perfect delivery form. If you want your customers to adjust their dosage, then scored tablets can provide that solution in a way that capsules cannot. If your formulation is intended to have a delayed release, then it can be delivered in either capsule or tablet form. We are happy to work with you to find the form that is right for your product and its purpose.

What is "tablet scoring"?

This term “tablet scoring” refers to the faint line seen on many tablets out there. One advantage of the tablet delivery form is that this can provide customers more control over their dietary supplement intake.

Why do tablets change color over time?

Exposure to air causes oxidation and can cause tablets to change color over time. This change can be a general tint or tiny spots.

Why do some tablets fall apart?

Tablets are compressed, but moisture, temperature, storage conditions, and time are all factors in destabilizing a tablet. Proper storage of finished product tablets is an important part of your tablet’s shelf-life .

What shapes and colors can you manufacture?

We custom contract manufacture a variety of tablet sizes and shapes. We can work with you on what you want your finished product color to look like as well.

Can you manufacture flavored chewable tablets?

Yes, we would love to be your contract manufacturer for your flavored, chewable tablet!

What are excipients and why are they used in tablet manufacturing?

Excipients like magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and others are used in dietary supplement manufacturing to help the active ingredients flow through the machinery during the manufacturing process. There are also excipients used to assist in the process of compression, prevent clumping of the ingredients, and provide stability to the finished product. Magnesium stearate, for example, is classified by the FDA as a Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) ingredient and helps prevent active ingredients in formulations from sticking to machinery. Excipients are a necessary part of successful capsule manufacturing, ensuring smooth processing, and producing a shelf-stable, attractive capsule finished product.
